New Paper: Room temperature dislocation loop dynamics in bcc refractory multi-principal element alloys

September 01, 2024

In this work, we study loop dynamics at room temperature across three refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs) using a phase field dislocation dynamics simulation method with Langevin dynamics.  The analyses show two stress regimes in the RMPEAs: at low stresses, edge glide is smooth and screw glide is jerky, while at high stresses, the edge mobility doubles and the edge-to-screw mobility ratio reaches approximately two.  We also tested a rapid density function theory-based method for generating energetic landscapes in large 3D crystals, finding that it efficiently predicts dislocation mechanisms, velocities, and mobilities consistent with a molecular statics-based method across a wide range of effective stresses at 300K.
